UPS® Follows Suit with Surcharge Increase

On June 6, UPS® customers can expect to pay an extra charge on shipping packages, measuring 48 inches or longer.

The shipping giant has announced that like its closest rival, FedEx®, it will be shrinking its large package size threshold from the current 60 inches to 48 inches; which will then attract the additional handling fees of $10.50. The change will come just 5 days after FedEx's surcharge increase on large packages takes effect on June 1, 2016.

A statement on the UPS website revealed that the changes are being implemented “due to the additional handling required for these types of packages in the UPS network”. The company also expressed that the change will not affect UPS Air or International shipments. It also seems that like its rival, FedEx, all other additional handling surcharge sizes, weight and packaging parameters will not be affected. Customers will be able to download the updated 2016 UPS Rate and Service Guide on June 6, 2016.
