UPS Fleet Gets an Eco-Friendly Makeover

In their 2016 Annual Corporate Sustainability Report, UPS announced environmentally-friendly commitments to update their fleet and processes. The goals are summed up in this excerpt from their press release:

UPS has a goal that 25 percent of the electricity it consumes will come from renewable energy sources by 2025, a dramatic increase from the 0.2 percent in 2016. In addition, by 2020 UPS plans that one in four new vehicles purchased annually will be an alternative fuel or advanced technology vehicle, up from 16 percent in 2016. The company also set a new goal that by 2025, 40 percent of all ground fuel will be from sources other than conventional gasoline and diesel, an increase from 19.6 percent in 2016."


Since 2009, they’ve already invested over $750 million in this initiative and they show no signs of stopping. In 2016, UPS had over 8,300 electric, hybrid electric, hydraulic hybrid, compressed natural gas, liquefied natural gas, propane and light-weight fuel-saving composite vehicles… and they’ll continue to utilize these alternatives to conventional gasoline where possible to power the fleet and other processes where applicable. The vision of the company is a “smart” logistics network that utilizes an even wider range of energy sources like on-site solar and wind power, as well as renewable natural gas and hydrogen among others.

This commitment to reducing environmental impact is an important announcement with huge implications at a time when e-commerce continues to surge. But UPS is not the only one. Since 2004, our policy focused on the environmental impact of Neopost products and industrial activities… and in 2006, we built up our green design policy. This means taking into account the environmental impact of our products throughout the entire lifecycle, including the end-of-life dismantling. We even introduced a remanufacturing concept in 2012, resulting in a 37% reduction in the environmental footprint of the product when compared with a new machine.
